Mieres is a municipality in the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain. It covers 146 sq km (56 sq mi) and has a population of 44,000 people (2012 estimate). The municipality of Mieres includes the main town, Mieres, as well as surrounding villages.
Mieres is located in the heart of the coal mining center of Spain. The mines here are the mainstay of the economy of Asturias. Of tourist interest in Mieres is its annual La Foguera de San Juan festival, in which huge bonfires are lighted.
