Seville is the capital and largest city in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in southern Spain. Also known as
Sevilla in Spanish, it is a city of 705,000 people (2011 estimate) within a metropolitan area of 1.5 million inhabitants.
Seville is located on the plain of the River Guadalquivir. It has a history going back over two thousand years. During Roman times, it was known as Hispalis. It was conquered and taken by the Moors in AD 712. That was when it was renamed Seville. Today many of the heritage sites within Seville are recognised as a World Heritage Site.

Seville benefited from the expedition of Christopher Columbus as all goods returning from the New World passed through the city before distribution throughout Spain. It was the only port awarded the royal monopoly for trade, and the wealth translated into many of the beautiful architecture of the city today.
Today Seville is a major tourist destination in Spain. In addition to its sights, the city is renowned for its cuisine, its
flamenco dance, its nightlife and its festivals, the most well-known of which are Semana Santa and Seville Fair.
