Biel/Bienne is one of the officially bilingual towns in Switzerland. It is known as Biel in German and Bienne in French. To keep everybody happy, the town is called Biel/Bienne, officially since 2005.

The town of Biel/Bienne covers 21.2 sq km (8.19 sq mi) and has a population of 50,000 people (2011 estimate). It is located at an altitude of 434 m (1,424 ft) above sea level.
Biel/Bienne is the second largest town in Bern canton after Bern itself, and the 10th largest in Switzerland. It is located at the foot of the Jura Mountains, on the shore of Bielersee/Lac de Bienne, at the point where the River Schüss enters the lake. Next to Biel/Bienne is its sister city, Nidau.
Biel/Bienne has a charming Old Town with cobblestone streets and fountains. From the town you can see the surrounding hills in the distance.
