Poschiavo is a municipality in Bernina district, in the canton of Graubünden, in eastern
Switzerland. Located 1,014 m (3,324 ft) above sea level, it spans over 191 sq km (73.75 sq mi) and has a population of 3,500 people (2012 estimate).

The earlist mention of Poschiavo is said to be made in AD 824, where it was stated as
in Postclave. However historians base this on a copy of the original document reproduced later. The name evolved to de Pusclauio in 1140 and continued to evolve under different languages, to arrive at Poschiavo.
The main occupation in Posciavo is farming. About 20% of the land is used for this purpose while another 32% remains forested. Close to half the land is non productive, being in the form of mountains and glaciers.
Most of the people in Poschiavo are Roman Catholics (86%) while only 9% belong to the Swiss Reformed Church. Italian is the predominant language here, spoken by 92% of the population.

Visiting Poschiavo
The nearest major town to Poschiavo is
St Moritz. From there, take Route 27 heading east till it joins Route 29. Follow Route 29 in a southeast direction to reach Poschiavo. It is within a part of Switzerland that is surrounded on three sides by
Italy.
