Stans is a small town that serves as the capital of the canton of Nidwalden in central
Switzerland. Located at an elevation of 452 m (1,483 ft), it covers 11.09 sq km (4.28 sq mi) and has a population of 8,000 people (2012 estimate).
Not only is Stans the capital of Nidwalden canton, it is also one of the oldest towns in the Nidwalden Valley. Evidence of human habitation here goes back to the 2nd century BC. The present town traces its history to its first mention in 1124. By the time the Swiss Confederation was formed, Stans was already serving as a district capital for Unterwalden nid dem Kernwald, which eventually became part of the canton of Nidwalden.
Today most of the people in Stans speak German as their mother tongue (91.6%), with Italian being the second most common language (2%).
