Verbier is the biggest and among the most famous ski-resorts in the Swiss Alps and in Europe. Located at an altitude of 1,500 m (4,921 ft) in southwestern Switzerland, it sits on a wide plateau facing south with fantastic views of the surrounding mountains in France as well as Italy.

The village of Verbier is in the canton of Valais. It has a population of around 2,600 (2011 estimate). It offers a wide range of winter activities as well as varied skiing conditions, ranging from slopes for beginners to pros. Verbier has some 400 km of ski runs, including glacier pistes and ungroomed terrain.
In summer, Verbiers attracts a different group of vacationers with summer sports ranging from golf to horse riding and mountain biking. There are many hiking trains to scenic spots around the village, including the Val de Bagnes, the Barrage de Mauvoisin and the 2,372 m (8,113 ft) mountain Pierre Avoi.

Among the annual events at Verbiers include Xtreme Verbier, an extreme sports event that include snowboarding down steep slopes. The Verbier Festival and Academy is a classical music festival and workshop open to all.

Getting to Verbier involves a few changes of transport. If you arrive in Geneva, take the train to Martigny, and then change trains to Le Châble. Then take the cable car or Postal Bus to Verbier.
