Barnstaple claims to be the oldest borough in the United Kingdom. The settlement dates back to pre-Saxon times, and is of probable Roman origin. Centuries of building and rebuilding has created a hodge-podge of buildings in the town center, with the majority of the old buildings from the 19th century.
