Bideford dates back to at least the 13th century, when the Long Bridge across River Torridge was built. The bridge has 24 arches, all of different sizes. Bideford was where three women accused of witchcraft were hanged in 1682. It was the last ever hangings for witchcraft in England.
Bideford originally covers the west bank of the River Torridge. Over time, it has grown to cover the east bank, which is known as East-the-Water, an area once marshland.
