Discover Birkenhead, Merseyside

Birkenhead is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, in Merseyside, England. It is located on the Wirral Peninsula, on the west bank of the River Mersey, across from the city of Liverpool. The town has a population of 85,000 people (2012 estimate).

The name Birkenhead is derived from the Old Englich bircen, meaning birch tree. The town was first mentioned in 1150, when Benedictine monks established a priory there. While Liverpool industrialized, Birkenhead remained a largely farming community right into the 19th century.

In 1929, shipbuilding was established in Birkenhead, and over the century, a number of notable vessels were built there including the HMS Achilles and CSS Alabama, among others.
