Bootle is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. Located just 6.4 km (4 mi) to the north of downtown Liverpool, Bootle has a population of around 80,000 people (2012 estimate). It is formally known as Bottle-cum-Linacre.
Bootle dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Boltelai. It remained a small hamlet until the early 19th century, when industrialization in nearby Liverpool created a sizable middle class, enabling it to develop into a bathing resort.
In the 1840s the railway line was constructed linking Bottle to Liverpool. This help bring more visitors to Bootle, causing it to experience rapid growth. Docks were constructed during this period. The town was part of Lancashire until 1889, when it became an independent county borough.
The docks of Bootle were severely devastated during the Second World War. Bootle earned the dubious distinction of being the most heavily bombed borough in the United Kingdom. In the post war years, Bootle redeveloped. It opened the Bootle New Strand shopping centre in the late 1960s. However the decline in importance of its docks led to massive unemployment, particularly in the 1980s. Since then, economy of Merseyside has rebounded, and the situation in Bootle has somewhat improved.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
