The history of Brackley goes back to the Norman Conquest, and appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it belonged to Earl Alberic. Ownership then passed to the Earl of Leicester and then to the families of De Quincy and Roland.

Brackley was where barons and representatives of the king met in 1215 to draft the Magna Carta, outlining terms to protect the rights of the king's subjects. Originally the Magna Carta was to be signed at Brackley Castle, but eventually this was done at Runnymede. Apart from this event, Brackley remained a town of limited significance.
