Bude developed in the 19th century when the quality of its sand was noted as useful for improving the moorland soil, hence sand quarrying was established. By the Victorian era, Bude was becoming a popular seaside retreat.

Bude has a number of beaches. Those within town limits include Summerleaze and Crooklets. A few miles to the south of Bude is Widemouth, which is a bay with sandy beach. Three miles to the north of Bude is Sandymouth Beach. It is a sandy beach between two headlands.

Bude itself is a charming little town with a number of historic buildings and churches. Some of the historic buildings along the wharf were demolished in the 1980s, but the historic Bude Canal has undergone restoration and is now open to boats.
