Burton upon Trent is a town in East Staffordshire, England. Also known as Burton-on-Trent, it straddles the River Trent, on the southwest side of the River Dove, which forms the natural boundary between Staffordshire and Derbyshire. Burton upon Trent is within the National Forest. It has a population of some 65,000 people (2012 estimate).

Although human habitation in the Burton upon Trent area goes back to at least the Roman period, the history of Burton upon Trent goes back to the Anglo-Saxon period, when a settlement was established on the River Trent. Its name means "settlement at a fortified place". The name has evolved from Burton super Trentam to Burton upon Trent, and in the 20th century, it has also often been called Burton-on-Trent.

Since the Middle Ages Burton upon Trent has developed into a center for breweries. There are as many as a dozen breweries in town at its peak. The choice of Burton upon Trent as a brewing center is due in no small part to the availability of good quality supply of water which flows out of the surrounding hills. Today there are stil five different brewers in town.

Burton upon Trent is today a modern English town with the usual branches of chain outlets. The main shopping mall in town is Cooper's Square, which opened in 1970.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
