Crewe is a railway town in the unitary authority of East Cheshire, in
Cheshire, England. It has a population of 68,000 people (2012 estimate).
Although a settlement called Creu has appeared as early as the 11th century, and was documented in the Domesday Book, the present town traces its beginnings to 1843, when Joseph Locke established a railway hub in the area. This was where British trains were manufactured and overhauled, and once employed as many as 20,000 people.
Today the locomotive works of Crewe is a mere shadow of its former self, employing fewer than a thousand people. The town is also an automotive center. This was where the Rolls-Royce was manufactured from 1946 until 2002. Bentley motor cars are still being produced in the Pyms Lane factory on the west side of town.
