Dorking traces its beginnings to Stane Street, a Roman road that was built to link London with Chichester on the English Channel. It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as the Manor of Dorchinges.

Its choice location at the junction of major roads made Dorking a prosperous farming town in the medieval period. In 1750 it became the staging post for trips to Brighton, with the completion of the Turnpike Road. However its position as a stage coach post declined when the railway line was built.

Today Dorking has managed to preserve the historic buildings in the town center. It is well known for its concentration of antique shops. The main shopping streets in town are High Street, West Street and South Street.
