Droitwich Spa sits on a huge salt deposit, and as such, salt has been extracted here since ancient times. During Roman times, there was a village here called Salinae. Even at that time, salt was being extracted. This comes from brine that rises naturally at three sites on the River Salwarpe. Due to the high value of the salt, the brine was even divided into shares. A salt tax is levied on the salt extracted, abolished only in 1825.
Droitwich became a spa town in the mid 19th century. This came about after a discovery was made that swimming or floating in the concentrated salt solution has therapeutic benefits. Broitwich has the warmest spa water in the country after
Bath.
The shopping precinct of Droitwich is focused around Victoria Square. This is where a farmers' market is regularly held. Waitrose has a supermarket here. Among the national retailers present in Droitwich include Aldi at Roman Way and a Tesco Express on Primsland.
