Exeter is a historic city within the ceremonial county of Devon, England. It serves as county town and home to the Devon County Council. Exeter covers 47.03 sq km (18.2 sq mi) and has a population of 120,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human habitation in the Exeter area can be traced back to as early as 250 BC. The city may have been established by ancient Britons. Under the Romans, a fortified settlement was built here, and traces of Roman walls can still be seen. There is even a substantial Roman bath complex which was escavated in the 1970s.
In AD 658, long after the Romans left the site, Saxon invaders conquered the area from the Britons. Thereafter the Saxons lived alongside the Britons, subjecting the latter to their laws. The present-day Bartholomew Street in Exeter was once an ancient British quarter, known until 1637 as Britayne.
Today Exeter has a diversified economy. Although it is a tourist destination, its economy is not dominated by tourism, which only employs 7% of its workforce. Exeter's economy depends heavily on the service industry, particularly the retail industry.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
