Filton is a small town in South Gloucestershire, in
Gloucestershire, England. It is located about 7 km (4 mi) to the north of
Bristol. The town has a population of around 10,000 people (2012 estimate).
Although it dates back to 1147, Filton remains a small farming town right into the 20th century. It only began to develop in the 20th century, particularly in the years between the two world wars. In 1907 it became the northern terminus of the Bristol Tramways.
Today Filton is noted for its aviation industry which began here in 1910. Initially the aeroplane manufacture facility was housed in the sheds of the Bristol Tramways. Today aircraft manufacturing facility is owned by Airbus.
