Grantham is a town in South Kesteven district, in southwest
Lincolnshire, England. It has a population of around 36,000 people (2012 estimate), excluding adjacent villages and housing estates.
The history of human habitation in the area surrounding Grantham goes back to the late neolithic period, based of existence of prehistoric burials at Little Gonerby, to the north of Grantham. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086. It received its Charter of Incorporation in 1463.
Grantham remained a small village until the 19th century, when the Nottingham railway line helped to fuel development in the area. In 1905 Richard Hornsby created a revolutionary engine that paved the way for the founding of the Caterpillar Tractor Company. The modern tank was also built using Hornsby's initial design, and manufactured in nearby Lincoln.
The townof Grantham holds an annual Grantham Parade and Grantham Festival. It is also famous for its gingerbread biscuits.
