Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire, England. Located in the Nidd valley, it forms a single urban area with the adjacent town of Knaresborough. Harrogate has a population of 75,000 people (2012 estimate).
The first of the mineral springs which Harrogate is renowned for was discovered in 1571 by William Slingsby, who found that it is of similar properties to mineral spring in the Belgian town of Spa. The town of Harrogate developed out of two settlements, High Harrogate and Low Harrowgate.
By the 18th century, Harrogate was making a name for itself as a spa town. To cater to an increase in the number of visitors, proper areas were earmarked for picnicking and outdoor games. The Georgian Theatre was built in 1788 to provide entertainment. The town was favored by the upper crust of English society, being the favorite spa town among the elites and nobility.
Today Harrogate is a modern town with a diverse economy. Carrying over from its role as a spa town, it has developed into a major conference and exhibition center in the region. The Harrogate International Centre is the third largest integrated conference and exhibition facility in the United Kingdom.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
