Haywards Heath is a town in Mid Sussex District, on the eastern part of
West Sussex, England. It is about 58 km (36 miles) south of
London and 19 km (12 mi) north of
Brighton. The town covers 9.75 sq km (3.76 sq mi) and has a population of 23,000 people (2012 estimate).
Haywards Heath was first mention in the English Civil War records in the 17th century. There is good reason to believe that the area has been inhabited or at least cultivated going back to the first century following Norman Conquest. The town itself is a relatively modern development that came about in the 19th century, following the construction of the London & Brighton Railway in 1841.
Its geographic location between London and Brighton helped Haywards Heath to develop as a commuter town, primarily for those employed in London as well as in nearby towns including Brighton,
Crawley and
Gatwick Airport.
The township of Bolnore Village, established on the southwest part of Haywards Heath, has brought significant development to the town as a whole. Part of the controversy has to do with the encroachment of the Bolnore Village area into a Site of Nature Conservation Interest in Ashenground and Catts Woods.
