The history of Hertford goes back to AD 673, when its name was mentioned for the first time, relating to the Council of Hertford, the synod of all the bishops of England. The synod was called by Theodore of Tarsus, the archbishop of Canterbury, and was attended by four other bishops.
When the Domesday Book survey was made in 1086, Hertford was a town with two churches, two markets and three mills. Following Norman Conquest, a castle was built here as was Hertford Priory. Hertford Castle was rebuilt by King Henry II in stone in 1216, and was regularly visited by English royalty. Hertford Priory was disbanded in the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII in 1536.
When the administrative boundaries of counties were redrawn in 1974, Hertford came within the East Hertfordshire district, its council being headquartered at the County Hall.

From London, take the A1(M) motorway until Exit 4, then continue heading east on the A414 road (Hertford Road) until you arrive in Hertford.

Places of Interest in Hertford
- All Saints' Church, Hertford: Late 19th century church, built on site of earlier place of worship.
- Church of St Leonard: Norman church in Bengeo, Hertfordshire. Daring to 1120, it is the oldest building in Hertford.
- Hertford Castle: Norman castle by the River Lea, dating to early fortifications by Edward the Elder in AD 911.
- Hertford Museum: Museum of local history, housed in a 17th century historic town house.
- Parliament Square: Main square in the heart of Hertford, so named because the Parliament of England was relocated there in 1563 when a plague hit London.
- Shire Hall: Historic building from 1779 designed by Robert Adam.
- St Andrew's Church: Mid 19th century church built on the site used earlier for worship.
