Kidderminster is a town in the Wyre Forest district in northern
Worcestershire, England. It has a population of around 60,000 people (2012 estimate). The River Stour flows through the town, as does the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal.
The history of Kidderminster goes back to the Anglo-Saxon period around the 7th century. Early records mentioned of a settlement called Stour-in-Usmere. In 1086, the Domesday Book listed the town as Chedeminstre, an early form that evolved into present-day Kidderminster by way of Kedeleministre/Kideministre in the 12/13th century, Kidereministre in the 13-15 centuries, and was first recorded as Kidderminster in the 16th century.
Kidderminster had a tradition for making carpets going back to the 18th century. The main player in the industry is Brintons Carpets, founded in Kidderminster in 1785 and still a major employer in the town today.
Present-day Kidderminster, as with most towns in England, has its share of national retail chains, including a Marks & Spencer, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Debenhams, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda and Aldi.
