Knowsley is a large village and civil parish in
Merseyside, England. It has a population of 12,000 people (2012 estimate). The village was historically part of Lancashire until the creation of Merseyside in 1974.
The village of Knowsley dates back to the Anglo-Saxon period. The area has been inhabited before that by the Celts, whose Celtic kingdom of Rheged covered the area. When the Anglo-Saxons took over the area, the existing Celtic village was captured and made an Anglo-Saxon village called Cenwulf. This is the name from which Knowsley derived. It is a couple of centuries older than Liverpool.
Knowsley appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Chenulveslei. Over the centuries the spelling of its name evolved until arriving as present-day Knowsley.
