Royal Leamington Spa is a spa town in Warwick district, in the heart of Warwickshire, England. It is commonly called simply as Leamington Spa or even just Leamington. Named after the River Leam that flows through it, Leamington has a population of around 40,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human habitation in the Leamington area goes back to Roman times. Even then, the therapeutic properties of its spa waters have been recognized (though it was only through their rediscovery by William Abbotts and Benjamin Satchwell in 1784 that brought back their popularity).
The Domesday Book in 1086 listed the town as Lamintone. The name is Anglo Saxon for "farm on the River Leam". In the following four hundred years, the town was a manor under the control of Kenilworth Priory. As such, it was also known as Leamington Priors.
Until 1784, there was only one known spring at Leamington. It is located on the properties of the 4th Earl of Aylesford, who refused to sell the water. However that year William Abbotts and his friend Benjamin Satchwell discovered a second spring. It was located on Abbott's property. This spring was open to commercial use. Its popularity led to the digging of several wells to draw spring water, and Leamington rapidly grew into the most fashionable spa resort in England.
Leamington was granted the Royal title to its name by Queen Victoria in 1838. She visited it for the first time in 1830 as a princess and again in 1858 as queen. A statue to her stands in town.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
