Leyburn is a small market town in Richmondshire district, in the shire county of North Yorkshire, England.
Leyburn was historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire. It is situated in Wensleydale, and got its name from the nearby stream. Its name means "clearing by the stream". It has been established at least since the Norman period, and received a Royal charter to hold a market on Fridays. The market offering farm produce is still being held every Friday.
Leyburn was where Mary Queen of Scots was recaptured after she excaped from Bolton Castle, where she was held prisoner from 1568 to 1569. Being in the Wensleydale, Leyburn is a tourist town. Many of the visitors to Leyburn come by train, since the re-opening of the Wensleydale Railway which runs for 35 km (22 miles) from Northallerton to Redmire, stopping at Leyburn between Spennithorne and Wensley.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
