Birdcage Walk is a street in the
City of Westminster, London. It runs in an east-west direction beginning at the intersection at Buckingham Gate to the junction with Horse Guards Road, where it continues as Great George Street.
For much of its length,
St James's Park is located to the north of it, while to the south of Birdcage Walk are the back portion of the buildings facing Old Queen Street,
Queen Anne's Gate and Petty France. At the western end of Birdcage Walk are the Wellington Barracks, where
the Guards Museum is located.
Birdcage Walk got its name from the aviary that was located there during the reign of King James I. Storey's Gate nearby was named after Edward Storey, Keeper of the King's Birds. The name Storey's Gate originally referred to a physical gate at the eastern entrance to Birdcage Walk. Today, however, it is the name of a street leading south to
Victoria Street and
Westminster Abbey.
How to reach Birdcage Walk
Take the Circle Line or District Line to the
St James's Park Tube Station on
the Broadway and walk a short distance from there.
