Borough High Street, London

Borough High Street is the main street in the district of Southwark in London. It is the street that runs from London Bridge through Southwark and is part of the A3 road, a major route that runs from London to Portsmouth. It continues beyond the intersection with Borough Rd as Newington Causeway.

Walking Tour of Borough High Street

Let me take you on a walk along Borough High Street, point out to you the sights as we pass along. We shall start our walk at London Bridge and head south.

From London Bridge, the first landmark we see on our left is Number One London Bridge, a brown high-rise block, with the side facing the bridge on one foot. On our right is Glaziers Hall, at 9 Montague Close. Next to it is the London Bridge Osteopathic Clinic.

Borough High Street passes under a railway bridge. Continuing beyond, there's Thomas St on our left. We are now in the high street of Southwark, with shops on both sides. A short distance from the junction of Thomas St is an entrance to the London Bridge Tube Station. Further down, we pass on our right one of the entrances to Borough Market, one of the biggest markets in London.

Beyond the entrance to Borough Market, the road forks with the right branch being Southwark St. Right at the junction is a branch of the HSBC bank, with Alma's Restaurant Pizzeria after it. Across the road, there's Lloyd's Bank to our left. At this point, Borough High Street has narrowed to two lanes, one in each direction.

A short distance on, you will see a monument on your right. That's the World War I Monument. It depicts a soldier charging forward. Continuing down Borough High Street, we see Truly Indian restaurant on our right. The street is quite narrow here, with space for a single lane of traffic on each side. We pass the junction with Union St to our right and Newcomen St to our left.

The next landmark, visible in the distance, is St George the Martyr Church. But before we get there, we pass Delta House to the left and Maya House and Willcox House to the right. St George the Martyr Southwark is located immediately after Tabard St on our left. There's an intersection with Long Lane to our left and Marshalsea Rd to our right. At the junction of Marshalsea Rd is the entrance to the Borough Tube Station. Beyond the entrance, there's a lovely Tudor-style restaurant called The Trinity. It is next to the London City Hotel. On the left side of the road is a Starbucks Coffee outlet.

Continuing down Borough High Street, we see a brownstone building on our left. This is Etc Venues, a site for meeting, training and conferences. Next to it is the British School of Osteopathy. Across the road is the first patch of greenery I saw since London Bridge. This stretch of Borough High Street is much wider than the previous, although traffic is kept to two lanes.

After the intersection with Trinity St (left) and Great Suffolk St (right), we pass the Metropolitan Police Station on our left. The space broadens again upon reaching the intersection with Harper Rd (left) and Borough Rd (right). The buildings here are also much lower than the previous stretch. This is where Borough High Street ends. Beyond the intersection, it continues as Newington Causeway.
