Burlington Arcade is a sheltered shopping arcade in London. It is one of the four such arcades built in the 19th century - the other three being the Princes Arcade, Piccadilly Arcade and Royal Opera Arcade. This was the "prototype" to modern shopping malls, and was built top sell jewelry and trinkets.
Burlington Arcade is parallel to Old Bond Street. It runs from
Piccadilly to Burlington Gardens. It was built on the order of Lord George Cavendish, owner of Burlington House. The arcade occupies what was the side garden of his house. He had it built to prevent passers-by from throwing rubbish into his compound.
When Burlington Arcade opened in 1819, it comprised a single row of seventy-two small two-storey shoplots. Many of these have now been combined into one, so now there are only about forty different stalls. The façade on the Piccadilly end was added in the early 20th century.
