Chelsea is a neighbourhood of Central London located within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is bounded by the River Thames, between Chelsea Bridge and River Westbourne. River Westbourne today is just a pipe discharging into the Thames above the Sloane Square Tube Station.
The name Chelsea is said to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning chalk wharf. Today the area defined as Chelsea includes the Chelsea Embankment, Cheyne Walk, Lots Road and Chelsea Harbour. The eastern boundary of Chelsea is defined by Chelsea Bridge Road and Lower Sloane Street, where it merges with Belgravia. On the north side, Chelsea fades into Knightsbridge and South Kensington north of Fulham Road.
Public parks in Chelsea includes the Albert Bridge Gardens, Battersea Bridge Gardens, Chelsea Embankment Gardens, and Chelsea Physic Garden.
