Drury Lane, London

Drury Lane is a street in the Covent Garden area of London. Not actually a lane, it runs from Aldwych in the City of Westminster to High Holborn in the borough of Camden. The street is synonymous with London theatres. Two of the most famous located here are the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and the New London Theatre.

The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane actually has its back to Drury Lane, while its front faces Catherine Street. It is the fourth theatre building to occupy the site since 1663, making the site the oldest in London occupied by a theatre.

Drury Lane was named after Drury House, the residence of Sir William Drury, Knight of the Garden during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603). By the 18th century, it had become one of the seediest part of London with rampant prostitution. Eventually development of Kingsway and Aldwych cleared up the area.

Drury Lane is also where J Sainsbury, the third largest supermarket chain in the United Kingdom, opened its first store in 1869. The store was located at 173 Drury Lane in Holborn.

How to reach Drury Lane

Take the Piccadilly Line to Covent Garden Tube Station and walk from there. Alternatively you can also take the Piccadilly Line or Central Line to the Holborn Tube Station.
