Embankment Tube Station (GPS: 51.50734, -0.12224) is a key
London Underground station located in the heart of the
City of Westminster, right on the
Victoria Embankment, beside the
River Thames. A vital interchange hub in central London, the station provides easy access to some of the city's most iconic landmarks and offers stunning riverside views just steps from its exits.
History
Embankment station has a fascinating history that reflects the evolution of London's transport network. It originally opened on 30 May 1870 as Charing Cross station, built by the District Railway (DR) - now part of the District line. It was part of the line's early expansion westward.
In 1906, the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway (BS&WR) - now the Bakerloo line - introduced deep-level tube services to the station. This was followed in 1914 by the Charing Cross, Euston & Hampstead Railway (CCE&HR), which later became part of the Northern line. The station's name changed several times in the early 20th century due to these developments and nearby name duplications. It was finally renamed Embankment in 1976, following the opening of the current Charing Cross tube station just to the north.
Embankment thus became a well-connected station combining both sub-surface and deep-level lines, linking various parts of the capital through its four Underground services.
