Gunnersbury Station (GPS: 51.49151, -0.27537) is a station of the London Underground and the National Rail. It is located off Chiswick High Road in Chiswick, in the
London Borough of Hounslow. The station is almost entirely hidden by the British Standards Institute skyscraper. You can see the London Underground and National Rail signages at the roadside. The railway tracks are immediately behind the building. It is served by the
District Line of the London Underground and the North London Line of the London Overground. It is in Travelcard Zone 3.
On the District Line, it is between
Kew Gardens Tube Station (heading towards
Richmond) and
Turnham Green Tube Station (heading towards
Upminster). On the North London Line, it is between Kew Gardens (heading towards Richmond) and South Action (heading towards
Stratford).
The Gunnersbury Tube Station was built in 1869 for the London and South Western Railway as a branch line to Richmond, and was originally known as the Brentford Road Station. Two years later it was given its present name. The Metropolitan District Railway - precursor to the District Line - began services here in 1877.
The station has an extraordinary history for calamity, as it had been damaged by tornado twice. The first time was on 8 December, 1954, and the second time, almost exactly 52 years later, on 7 December, 2006.
