Where is Hobart Place?
Hobart Place is a small but notable road situated in the heart of the
City of Westminster, in central London. Nestled in the
Belgravia district, this refined street plays an important role in connecting key residential and commercial areas.
Length and Layout
Hobart Place is approximately
170 metres (or around 560 feet) in length. Despite its short span, it serves as a strategic connector between
Grosvenor Gardens to the northeast and
Eaton Square to the southwest, forming a gentle curve as it transitions into the larger, leafy square.
History and Development
The street was laid out during the
mid-19th century as part of the Grosvenor Estate's Belgravia development, which transformed former marshland into one of London's most prestigious neighbourhoods. Like much of Belgravia, Hobart Place was developed under the influence of master builders such as Thomas Cubitt, known for his grand stuccoed terraces and classical style.
Name Origins
Hobart Place was
named in the 1850s after the
Earl of Buckinghamshire, a title held by members of the Hobart family - influential figures in British aristocracy. The Hobarts had long-standing ties to British colonial and parliamentary history, and naming a street after them was a nod to their prestige and standing.
Connected Roads
Hobart Place connects directly to several key roads:
- Grosvenor Gardens - leading northeast toward Victoria Station
- Eaton Square - a continuation to the southwest
- Lower Belgrave Street - joins from the west
- Grosvenor Crescent - accessible nearby, linking to Hyde Park Corner
Notable Buildings on Hobart Place
On the east side, Hobart Place is home to elegant stucco-fronted buildings forming part of the Belgravia Conservation Area. These include:
- 9 Hobart Place - a listed Georgian-style residence
- Offices of international businesses and financial firms
On the west side, notable features include:
- The Goring Hotel's rear annex - a discreet extension of the luxury hotel
- Private residences and embassies, set behind classic white façades

London Underground. The closest stations are:
- Victoria Station - served by the Victoria, District, and Circle lines (just a 3-minute walk)
- Hyde Park Corner - served by the Piccadilly line (about 10 minutes on foot)
Fun Fact
A curious detail about Hobart Place is that it's often mistaken as part of Grosvenor Gardens due to its seamless architectural flow. Yet locals know it by name - and it has even appeared as a filming location in period dramas because of its timeless 19th-century charm.
