Notting Hill is an area in West London, England. It is located close to the north-western corner of Hyde Park, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.
Notting Hill today is well known as an affluent and fashionable area - it movie Notting Hill starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant further fueled interest. The area has attractive Victorian townhouses, and high-class shopping and restaurants.
It is not sure how "Notting Hill" got its name, although it appeared as Knottynghull in a document from 1878. It would have have originated from the name of a manor. Today Notting Hill is also associated with artists and where "alternative" culture can be seen or practised.
Getting there
The nearest stations of the London Underground include the
Ladbroke Grove Tube Station,
Holland Park Tube Station and
Notting Hill Gate Tube Station. Buses to Notting Hill include Nos. 23, 52 and 94.
What to see
The Notting Hill Carnival takes places every year on the Sunday and Monday August bank holiday weekend.
