Ripley Building (Old Admiralty Building), London


Ripley Building, popularly called Old Admiralty Building, is the oldest building in the Admiralty complex, in Whitehall, London. It was designed by Thomas Ripley, a former carpenter. Ripley Building is a three storey u-shaped building completed in 1726. It is notable for being the first purpose-built office building in Great Britain.

The Old Admiralty Building is located comprises five buildings. These are now occupied by the government for various offices such as the Cabinet Office and government function rooms. The Ripley Building is the oldest building in the Admiralty complex.

Getting there

Take the London Underground to the Charing Cross Tube Station and walk a short distance from there.
