South Wimbledon Station (GPS: 51.4153, -0.19197) is a station of the London Underground in South Wimbledon, in the
London Borough of Merton. It is located at the junction of Merton High Street (A238) with Merton Road (A219), at the boundary of Travelcard Zones 3 and 4. The station is served by the Northern Line between
Colliers Wood Tube Station (heading towards Edgware Tube Station,
Mill Hill East and
High Barnet) and
Morden Tube Station, the terminus of the line.
As with the other stations on this stretch of the line, it was designed by Charles Holden and began operations in 1926 for the City & South London Railway, the precursor of today's Northern Line. It was originally planned to be known as Merton Grove station, and was originally named South Wimbledon (Merton). Over time, the word Merton was dropped from the name. The curious thing is that despite its name, it is not actually in Wimbledon, but was still given that name because Wimbledon is thought to be classier than Merton.
