Arsenal Station (GPS: 51.55846, -0.10573) is a station of the London Underground located in the neighbourhood of Highbury, in the
London Borough of Islington. Originally known as Gillespie Road Tube Station, it was renamed in 1932 after the Arsenal Football Club - the only tube station to ever be renamed after a football club - as the club was playing at the nearby Arsenal Stadium (which closed in 2006, and Arsenal now plays at the new Emirates Stadium). The wall tiles of the station still show the old name of "Gillespie Road".
Arsenal Tube Station is served by the
Piccadilly Line between
Holloway Road Tube Station and
Finsbury Park Tube Station in Travelcard Zone 2. It first began operations on 15 December 1906 for the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway.
