Baden-Powell House (
map) is a six-storey building in
South Kensington, London, built as a tribute to Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of modern scouting. Located at 65-67 Queen's Gate, Kensington, it houses a conference centre and hostel, and also showcases memorabilia associated with Baden-Powell.
Baden-Powell House dates back to 1942, when Chief Scout Lord Somers proposed the setting up of a facility for use as economic lodging for visiting scouts and their family members. This led to the forming of a building committee headed by Sir Harold Gillett, the Lord Mayor of London. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Baden-Powell in 1959. It was designed in the Modern style by Ralph Tubbs. The £ 400,000 building was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1961.
Baden-Powell House is located within walking distance of several world-class museums including the
Natural History Museum,
Science Museum and
Victoria and Albert Museum.
