Hammersmith Bridge is one of the bridges across the River Thames. It connects the neighbourhood of Hammersmith, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, on the northern bank of the Thames, with Barnes, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, on the southern bank. The present bridge is the second one on the site.
The first bridge at this site was built in 1824 at a cost of £80,000. It was 210 meters (688 ft) across the river, with suspension towers that are 15 m (48 ft) tall. Over time, the bridge was unable to sustain the increase weight from the increase in traffic and usage. The present bridge, also a suspension bridge, was designed by civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette and opened by the Prince of Wales on 11 June 1887. It cost £82,117 to build. Today the Hammersmith Bridge is a Grade II listed heritage structure.
