Where Is Leicester Square?
Leicester Square is located in the
City of Westminster, at the heart of London's bustling
West End. It is surrounded by several well-known neighbourhoods:
Soho to the north,
Covent Garden to the east,
St James's to the south, and
Chinatown to the west.
Size and Population
Leicester Square itself is a relatively compact area, centred around the public square of the same name. It is more of a commercial and leisure district than a residential neighbourhood, so its residential population is very small - estimated in the low hundreds. However, millions of people pass through it every year.
History and Development
The area was developed in the 17th century after the construction of Leicester House in 1635 by Robert Sidney, the 2nd Earl of Leicester. Over time, the surrounding land was built up into a fashionable residential area before evolving into a hub for theatres, hotels, and later cinemas during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
Origin of the Name
Leicester Square takes its name from
Leicester House, the former residence of the Earl of Leicester. The square was officially laid out and named in the late 17th century, reflecting the growing influence of the noble family at the time.
