London Olympic Stadium is the centrepiece of the London Olympic Park, and main venue of the 2012 London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The stadium is located at Marshgate Lane in Stratford, in East London. It was built between mid 2007 and 29 March 2011, when construction was completed. After the Games are over, the London Olympic Stadium will be renovated to become the new home of either Tottenham Hotspur Football Club or West Ham United Football Club.
The London Olympic Stadium was built at a cost of £537 million. It was designed by the architectural firm of Populous. The stadium will be able to accommodate 80,000 spectators. The material used for its construction is lauded as being environmentally sustainable. For example, an environmentally sustainable fabric will be used to wrap around the exterior of the stadium.
Despite the stadium's design leaning towards environment consciousness, many architecture critics have compared it unfavorably against the Beijing National Stadium, venue of the Beijing Olympic Games. They don't find it comparatively spectacular, and not worthy as a national icon.
