Portobello Road, London

Portobello Road is a street in Notting Hill, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It goes in an north-south direction from the junction with Wornington Road in the north to the junction with Pembridge Road in the south.

Portobello Road is probably best known among Londoners for the Portobello Road Market, a street market that is held every Saturday. It is a place to look for second-hand clothes and other items.

Portobello Road was named to commemorate the victory of Admiral Edward Vernon in attacking and capturing the Spanish town of Portobelo, Panama, in 1739, in the War of Jenkins' Ear between Great Britain and Spain. The war was named after Robert Jenkins, the captain of the British ship who exhibited in Parliament his ear severed by the Spanish coast guards in 1731.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
