St Mary's Hospital, London


St Mary's Hospital is a prestigious hospital in Paddington, London. It is operated by the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The hospital is located at Praed Street, in the City of Westminster.

The hospital was founded in 1845 and is world renowned for having a number of famous researchers based there. Among them was Alexander Fleming, whose discovery of penicillin in 1928 was honored by a Nobel Prize in 1940. His laboratory within the hospital has been preserved as the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum.

Other famous researchers at St Mary's Hospital include Rodney Porter, who won the 1972 Nobel Prize for determining the chemical structure of an antibody, Randall Sollenberger, who invented and pioneered the use of mobile operating theatre, Augustus Waller, whose research led to the invention of the electrocardiogram, Felix Eastcott, who performed the first ever carotid endarterectomies, and many more.

St Mary's Hospital is also the birth place of many famous people such as Elvis Costello and Kiefer Sutherland, and member of the royal family including Prince William, Prince Harry, and more.

Visiting St Mary's Hospital

Take the London Underground (Bakerloo Line, Circle Line) to Paddington Station and then walk northeast along Praed Stret until you reach St Mary's Hospital on your left.
