Stratford is a district within the London Borough of Newham in East London. It is located 9.7 km (6 mi) to the east northeast of Charing Cross. Located at the northwesternmost part of the London Borough of Newham, it borders Hackney Wick, in the London Borough of Hackney, and Bow in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, both to the west, and Leyton in the London Borough of Waltham Forest to the north.
Formerly a farming community which is part of the parish of West Ham, Stratford today has become an industrial suburb of London. This transformation came about following the construction of a railway line to reach it from central London in 1839.
Today Stratford is receiving a boost as it is right next to the
London Olympic Park. Another exciting new development is the
Westfield Stratford City Shopping Centre, the biggest shopping mall in Europe when in opens in late 2011.
