Tate Modern (GPS: 51.50759, -0.09926) is Britain's national museum of international modern art. It is one of the Tate national galleries including Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives, and Tate Online, all named after Sir Henry Tate, the English sugar merchant who established the Tate Britain in 1897.

Tate Modern is housed in the former Bankside Power Station, which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the same architect as the Battersea Power Station. Bankside was built in two stages between 1947 and 1963, and it closed in 1981. Tate Modern opened on 12 May 2000, and has since become a popular attraction among the locals as well as tourists. Entry to collection displays and some temporary exhibitions is free.

A popular way to reach Tate Modern is via the Millennium Bridge from St Paul's Cathedral. Although the closest tube station is Southwark, it may be more convenient to use the Waterloo or Blackfriars tube station. The lamp posts between Southwark tube station and the gallery are painted orange to guide visitors to Tate Modern.

One can take a riverboat from Tate Modern to Docklands and Greenwich. The pier is located just outside the gallery. Tate Modern is also connected to Tate Britain via a highspeed boat service, called Tate to Tate.

Under planning stage is an extension to Tate Modern, in the form of a glass pyramid which will house exhibits on photography and video, among others. It will be located on the south side of the main building. The extension is expected to increase display space by 60%. It will cost approx. £215 million and is expected to be ready in 2012, in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
