Looe is a small coastal town in southeast Cornwall, England. Straddling the River Looe, it comprises East Looe and West Looe, and has a population of around 5,000 people. The town is about 32 km (20 mi) west of Plymouth and 11 km (7 mi) south of Liskeard.
The area around Looe has been inhabited as early as 1000 BC. Among the archaeological remains include the stone circle at Bin Down and the so-called Giant's Hedge. East Looe is the older of the two parts of Looe, having received its town charter some time between 1154 and 1189.
The first stone bridge across the Looe River was built in 1436, replacing a wooden one that burned down some time earlier. Due to its coastal location, Looe developed into a busy port with thriving fishing and boatbuilding industries. The town was in decline by the beginning of the 19th century, but received a much-needed boost with the construction of a canal connecting it with Liskeard in 1828.
Since the mid 19th century, Looe has developed into a tourist down. Although it is still a fishing town, tourism has become the main business.

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
