Market Rasen is a small market town in West Lindsey district in central
Lincolnshire, England. It has a population of just around 3,000 people (2012 estimate). It took its name from the River Rase that flows thorugh it.
Market Rasen dates back to the Anglo Saxon period. Its name, derived from the river flowing through it, is Anglo Saxon for "plank". It has served as a market town for produce from the surrounding region since its early days. A farmer's market is still being held here on the first Tuesday of every month, while regular market days are on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Today Market Rasen remains a small town. Most of the houses here were built in the Georgian and Victorian era. At the center of town is the St Thomas' Church, first built in the medieval period and rebuilt in the 19th century.
