Newhaven is a town at the mouth of the River Ouse, in
East Sussex, England. It is to the west of Seaford.
Human settlement in the Newhaven area goes back to the Bronze Age. During the Anglo-Saxon period, a village was established here called Meeching. This developed into present-day Newhaven.
Newhaven was just a small village until the mid 19th century, when the London Brighton and South Coast Railway line was built to Lewes. The railway company funded the dredging of the channel as well as the construction of wharf and harbor facilities. It enabled cross channel ferry services to be introduced.
