Newport is the county town of the Isle of Wight, England. Located on the north-central part of the island, Newport has a population of some 25,000 people (2012 estimate). It is on the River Medina which flows north towards the straits of Solent.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Newport has been inhabited since Roman times. There was a Roman settlement here called Medina. Remains of two Roman villas have been uncovered. One of these, the Newport Roman Villa, has now been open to the public.

Being geographically the most central town on the Isle of Wight, Newport is the road and railway hub of the island. It is 10.8 km (6.73 mi) from Ryde, the largest town on the island.
